Chapter Thirteen

When Rose left and ran out in a whirlwind following that toe-curling kiss, the Foster House main door flew open with a vibrating clap, bouncing off the interior wall. Dax glanced toward the kitchen, hoping the noise hadn’t woken May, but she had to wait to confirm. One more glimpse of Rose , Dax told herself before she rushed out the door and stared in the direction in which Rose had taken off. Each time Rose passed a streetlight, she got smaller and smaller, as did Dax’s hope of holding her again anytime soon.

Before Rose disappeared inside the Seaside Hotel, Dax whispered, “I’ll wait for you.”

Dax retreated to the kitchen, put the towels she and Rose had used in the laundry basket, and stored the new bowls and spatulas May had ordered from Edith. All the while, she was a mix of hope and frustration. Rose still loved her. That much was clear. But was love enough for Rose to give up a traditional life with the possibility of children? Was what she and Rose shared enough to live in the shadows for the rest of their lives?

A knock on the back door stopped her from heading upstairs to alternate between sulking and fantasizing. Dax opened the door, finding Charlie standing in the dark with hands in her coat pocket and a newsboy hat pulled down low. If not for Brutus leaning against her leg with sheets of drool dropping to the gravel, Dax would’ve mistaken Charlie for a hoodlum ready to pull off a heist.

Dax placed an index finger over her lips and issued a shh before gesturing for Charlie to come in. “May’s sleeping.”

Charlie issued Brutus a shh with her index finger against her lips before they tiptoed inside. Well, Charlie tiptoed. Brutus swayed silently into the kitchen, exchanging snorts for more drool. Charlie handed Dax the keys to the Model T. “The new tires are on, and I got her purring like a cat. I even gave her a good polish.”

“Thanks, Charlie, but you didn’t have to make a special trip.” Dax ushered her deeper inside the kitchen toward the chopping block in the center of the room. Brutus began a detailed inspection of the room’s perimeter, sniffing at every nook and cranny. If Dax had missed a crumb or splash of sauce, Brutus was on track to find it.

“I wanted to get her in your hands for the Half Moon Bay weekend.” Charlie’s weekend reference had taken Dax by surprise when she first arrived in town. Because the city was a tourist destination, nearly every business was open on Saturday and Sunday. And when the tourists packed up and left by late Sunday afternoon, the weekend started for the locals.

“You’re a lifesaver. I need to start picking up our daily produce to save on the delivery charges. Though…” Dax drifted off, thinking about those head-spinning kisses with Rose earlier this evening.

“That must be one heck of a though with that smile of yours.”

Dax gestured for Charlie to sit on May’s stool.
